Parting is such spicy sorrow

If you want to get your Israeli falafel fix, awesome veggie lasagna fix or just a good ol' motzei Shabbat fix, and have it all with a hechsher, better get to Spice before Tuesday, May 1. According to BC Kosher, they will no longer be certifying Spice Restaurant and Catering, starting on that date.

It's a sad day for Vancouver kosher consumers.

*Please note: we do not know why Spice will no longer be certified, so please don't start any rumours. If you want more information, please contact Rabbi Lando of BC Kosher at 604.731.1803.

I just grabbed what will likely be my last meal at Spice, a very sad, but delicious event. I asked him why he wasn't continuing with supervision. He said that there hadn't been enough support from the community. It amazes me that a restuarant like Sabras can stay open as long as it has, with the middling to poor quality of its food, where as a restaurant like Spice has to struggle to stay open.

I live in Victoria, where we just dream about going out for a kosher meal in a restaurant. I am saddened and disappointed at the loss of Spice.

Thanks for the info, Mark. You know what they say: location, location, location. Sabras is in the heart of the 'chood. You have to work to go to Spice.

It's sad to know that's why Spice is no longer certified. As a community, we have no right to complain about lack of choice.

I was present at a shiur by the Z"L Rav Levi Bistritsky, sent by the Lubavitch Rebbe in 1974 to be the Rav of Kehilas Chabad in Tzfat. He later became Ashkenazi Rav of Tzfat and was in charge of the city's kashrus.
The shiur was around 25 years ago. There came up questions about spices in general."What could be wrong with this spice"? The Rav tld us that the articular spice was grond with a certain very un-kosher beef oil to help it mix well with your food as it cooked.
Rav Bistritsky z"l said there is a clal :
"never say what could be non kosher in this". Don't we check our medicines for any un-healthy ingredients?
The vegetarians of the world who allowed themselves to skip the ( ) but ate the french fries at one of America's most famous fast food chain exports to even Communist China and...France itself found thatthe fries were fried first in pi- fat, frozen, shiped and re-fried in regular oil.oy!
